SOIL HEALTH & TESTING

Healthy plants begin with healthy soil.

INTRODUCTION TO THE SOIL FOOD WEB & BENEFITS

Whether you plan on growing in a small corner of your yard or on a thousand acres, it’s important to understand what soil health is and to go beyond the conventional, reductionist way of thinking into a more holistic and systematic way of thinking. That means getting out of the NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) mindset and into the Soil Food Web.

Understanding the concepts of the Soil Food Web and learning as much as you can about how to create a healthy, biodiverse Soil Food Web will set your garden or farm up for better long-term success. This will save you money on unnecessary inputs that actually might be doing your soil more harm than good. A healthy Soil Food Web can also translate into better yields and more nutritious food.

Dr. Elaine Ingham is one of the world’s preeminent soil microbiologists. Her Soil Food Web School has been teaching about soil for decades, training commercial farmers and home gardeners. No background in farming or biology necessary! We don’t think there’s anyone better to get you started.

We’ve assembled two groups of videos that explain the Soil Food Web. The first 5 short videos will give you a firm overview of the Soil Food Web. The second group of videos are in-depth discussion webinars with Dr. Ingham and soil experts.

A DEEPER DIVE INTO THE SOIL FOOD WEB

Webinar 1: Rapidly Rebuild Your Soil Health Part 1: How Healthy Soil Works (1 hour 43 min) - In this webinar, we’ll be looking at the biology that nourishes and protects your plants and crops. We’ll be exploring some of the many benefits that healthy soils offer, like: Increased yields, protection against pests and diseases, and resistance to drought and flood. You’ll learn about the interactions between soil microorganisms and plants, and you’ll be introduced to some of the amazing ways in which the natural world functions in the soil beneath our feet. Let’s learn how to rapidly rebuild your soil health!

Webinar 2: Rapidly Rebuild Your Soil Health Part 2: Soil Health Success Stories (2 hours) - Soil Regeneration expert Didi Pershouse shares a case study where 700,000 farmers in India have been using regenerative agriculture to rebuild their soils. This is an outstanding example of how farmers and gardeners can thrive in harmony with nature.

Webinar 3: Rapidly Rebuild Your Soil Health Part 3: How to Kickstart Soil Health With Beneficial Fungi (2 hours) - In this webinar, we look at the 3 steps you can take with beneficial fungi to rebuild the health of your soils. The process starts by locating and gathering beneficial microorganisms from your local area. The second step is to multiply the beneficial microorganisms using the close-control, aerobic composting method developed by Dr. Elaine Ingham. This ensures that many pathogens are eliminated and that you get a good balance of the 4 key groups of microorganisms needed in a healthy soil. In step 3, we apply the beneficial microorganisms to the soil in either solid (compost) or liquid (teas/extracts) form - depending on the context. Once the organisms are back in the soil, it is imperative that regenerative methods are adopted, to ensure that the soil biome is protected.
